A race bmw 316, m10, s14, m20, turbo, na, its been the lot!
Will the internals and head fit any other bmw block with a different crank?
not really, there are other shorter stroke cranks i could use but then i need different rods or pistons
I was asking about the damper as it must have taken some very unusual harmonics to break the front piece of the crank off as there would not really be any big loading in this part of it.
yes i'd agree, not really going to know until its all in bits, all i know at the moment is the nose of the crank wobbles all over the place but something still holding it in the engine
Would four rods and pistons be a lower cost option to a new BMW or Farndon crank and also mean that you would have good availability of cranks in the future or would the short stroke engine be a dog?

i dont feel short stroking would be viable, it would necessitate a total engine redesign,
also whilst reducing the capacity could make it rev better the torque loss would really hurt, with an over weight car its the big torque that keeps it competitive
i woke up this morning with perhaps some of the reason why traction out the elbow was so much poorer this year than last,
last year i ran at lydden with a 3.9 diff, this year i had the 4.27 fitted, which also explains why the gearing felt "off" and why i couldnt get all the way up hairy hill without a gearchange
thanks to some nice TS members helping out by buying some of stuff i have kicking around doing nothing im a little over halfway to having the dosh to get a new steel crank from fardon, my minds made up im going for a longer stroke, cant yet decide whether to go for 91 or 91.6mm, theres only about 30cc difference in engine size between the two the bigger one giving me 2597cc, but the longer one means i will have to machine a bit off the top of my pistons, but 30cc is still 30cc @100 bhp per lire thats 3bhp
the only other thing i've done is to buy a radiator off yodi, its an areoplane one, quite small as its double cored, its for the new shell, im hoping as well as it cooling well enough, that i can mount it behind the slam panel and still have room for the dry sump tank, my current rad is further forward, meaning slightly better weight distribution plus will be less vulnerable to damage.
on the face of it it will fit nicely with some adaptations to the plumbing, although i cant be sure without the drysump tank to hand and also the engine in this car is an m40 not the m10 i use
maybe, if i get it back from fardon as they are going to have it as both a pattern and to see why it broke, if i have to pay to get it back (P+P) they can keep it!!!!!!!!
